The Lev-Brett Bowl
Penn vs. Rutgers (w/ guest Saint Joseph's)

THE RACE - The Penn lightweight crew team opens its spring season Saturday at historic Boathouse Row against Rutgers and Saint Joseph’s in the Lev-Brett Bowl race. The Quakers are hoping to build on an outstanding 2005 spring season and strong fall that saw them named the EARC Lightweight Crew of the Year after finishing third at the 2005 IRA Regatta.

THE FALL SEASON - Penn had a solid fall season that saw them end on a high note. The Quakers captured both the Head of the Schuylkill and the Princeton Chase over a two-day span at the end of October. They won the Head of the Schuylkill by 26 seconds over Delaware before winning the Princeton Chase by four seconds over crews from Yale, Harvard, Navy and Princeton.

LAST SEASON - The Penn lightweights start 2006 with a great deal of optimism after the team’s third-place IRA finish last year, which represented Penn’s best showing since finishing second in 1992. The Quakers finished just 1.32 seconds off the silver-medal pace at IRA’s.

THE COACHES - Penn’s Mike Irwin enters his fourth season in charge of the lightweight program. He was named the EARC Lightweight Coach of the Year in October. Rutgers’ John Parker is starting his first year after serving a year as the freshman coach at Columbia.

THE HISTORY - All-time, Penn holds a 25-15 advantage in the Lev-BrettBowl race, which was established in 1966 by the friends of Penn Rowing. Despite Penn’s historical dominance, it has been Rutgers’ race in recent years. Last year, the Quakers won by 4.2 seconds, breaking a streak of seven wins by the Scarlet Knights.
