Lightweight Freshman Sweep Pair of Races

PHILADELPHIA - On Senior Day on the Schuylkill River, it was the freshmen who stole the show for the University of Pennsylvania lightweights on Saturday. The Quakers earned a pair of wins in the freshman races against M.I.T. and in the Callow Cup.

Last year, the Quakers had claimed the Callow Cup back from Navy for the first time since 2000. This year, a tightly-contested varsity race came down to the wire, but the Midshipmen earned the cup with a one-second victory. Navy finished with a time of 5:45.1, while the Quakers stopped the clock at 5:46.6. Delaware joined the race as a guest and finished in 5:42.0.

Penn bounced to win the freshman race in convincing fashion. The Quakers opened up an open-water lead and cruised to victory with a winning time of 6:01.9. Navy was a distant second at 6:13.8. In the second freshman race, the Quakers finished third with a time of 6:35.1.

Later in the day, the Quakers matched up with M.I.T. in a dual. Once again, the freshmen were victorious. It was also another open-water win for the Red and Blue. The Penn freshmen finished in 5:54.0 to top the Engineers by 14 seconds. The varsity fell in yet another close race as M.I.T. finished in 5:58.7 and the Quakers came across in 6:00.7. In the final race of the day, M.I.T. won the third varsity at 6:29.7 as Penn finished in 6:39.4.

Saturday's races concluded the 2014 regular season for the Quakers. Next up for the Red and Blue are the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 18 in Worcester, Mass.
