M.I.T. Duel Results

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - In the first of two regattas on Saturday, the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team posted a victory in the freshman race at the Callow Cup, but the Midshipmen won the cup race on the Severn River. Penn then returned to the Schuylkill River and took three of four from M.I.T.

The morning in Annapolis began with the first varsity race. The Midshipmen got off to a strong start, but the Quakers held closed water until about the 1,200-meter mark. On its home course, Navy opened up the lead down the stretch and won with a time of 5:46.9 to Penn's 5:54.0.

The freshman won decisively for the Quakers. They gained an open-water lead early on and were never really threatened by the Midshipmen. Penn stopped the clock at 6:07.4 for an eight-second win over Navy.

Navy claimed the second and third varsity races. There was a 17-second gap in the second varsity race and the third varsity race, which involved some heavyweight competition, finished with a time of 6:02.4 to Penn's 6:19.0.

After the return trip home to the Schuylkill, Penn posted an open-water victory in the varsity race with a time of 5:36.9. M.I.T. finished nine seconds later. The freshman garnered their second win of the day with a time of 5:46.1 for a six-second victory and both Penn boats in the second varsity beat M.I.T., with times of 6:27.0 and 6:30.0.

The Quakers are en route to Philadelphia to take on M.I.T. starting at 3 p.m. The Eastern Sprints are up next for the Quakers. On May 15, the Red and Blue will travel to Worcester, Mass., where Penn reached the Varsity Grand Final for the first time since 2005 last season.
