PHILADELPHIA – The sixth-ranked Penn men’s lightweight rowing team competed for the Dodge Cup alongside No. 2 Yale and Columbia on Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River.
On an early morning with a light tail current and 8-10 mile per hour tail winds, Yale regained possession of the cup after a one year hiatus with a narrow margin of victory over Columbia and Penn. It marked the 39th victory for Yale dating back to the establishment of the Dodge Cup in 1955.
The regatta was run simultaneously alongside the Penn heavyweights and the Blackwell Cup.
The men’s lightweight varsity 8+ race commenced at 8:30 a.m. and Penn notched a third place finish in a time of 5:50.3. They clocked in behind Yale (5:32.6) and Columbia (5:34.4) for the Dodge Cup.
In the second varsity 8+, Penn finished just behind Columbia in 5:59.6 for third while Yale claimed victory in 5:47.2.
The Quakers also collected bronze in third varsity where they were eight seconds behind Yale for first place. Columbia tallied silver in 5:57.7.
Penn’s fourth varsity 8+ came in second behind Yale, who won the race in 6:07.5. The Quakers finished in 6:18.9.
The regatta marked the second-consecutive weekend of racing against the top teams in the country for the Red and Blue. Penn competed against two-time defending national champions Cornell last weekend in Ithaca, N.Y. for the Matthews-Leonard Cups. Yale and Columbia were both tied for the No. 2 spot this week in the US Rowing Collegiate poll with 109 points while the Quakers secured the No. 6 spot with 80 points.
Penn returns to action a week from today when they compete for the Wood-Hammond Cup against Princeton and Georgetown in Princeton, N.J. on April 23rd.
