Lightweight Rowing Named EARC Crew of the Year

BOSTON - The Penn lightweight rowing team was honored with a pair of awards at Monday's EARC coaches' meeting. The Quakers were named EARC Crew of the Year and Head Coach Mike Irwin was named Coach of the Year.

Both awards come on the heels of an outstanding 2005 spring season for Irwin's crew. The varsity eight took bronze at the IRA Regatta and was just 1.32 seconds off of the silver medal pace. It was the Quakers' best finish at the IRA Regatta since the early 1990's, when they took silver in 1992 and bronze in 1993.

"It was very unexpected and a nice surprise," said Irwin. "While the nine members of last year's bronze medal IRA crew deserve much of the credit, it has truly been a total team effort for three seasons to achieve the result."

The Quakers return to action at a pair of events this weekend, taking part in the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday and the Princeton Chase on Sunday.
