NEW YORK, N.Y. In the Varsity 8 race, the University of Pennsylvania men’s lightweight rowing team bested Ivy rival Columbia on its home course, but just missed on claiming the Dodge Cup from Yale on Saturday afternoon at Orchard Beach Lagoon.
The Quakers were five seconds off the pace in the Varsity 8 race as Yale reclaimed the Dodge Cup with a first-place finish of 5:57.3. However, the Red and Blue were a little more than two seconds better than the host Lions to finish in second place with a time of 6:02.1. Columbia’s crew came in at 6:04.8.
Penn also finished second in the Second Novice 8 and the 3rd Varsity race. Penn’s second freshman boat finished behind the strong pace set by Yale in the Novice 8. The Quakers finished in a time of 7:03.7 to Yale’s 6:46.8. The third varsity boat was also behind the Bulldogs pace of 6:26.0, crossing the finish line in a time of 6:41.6.
In the Novice 8 race, the Quakers’ first freshman boat was third, behind both Yale and Columbia with a time of 6:22.8. The second varsity boat had a similar result in its race, placing third and stopping the clock at 6:22.1.
Much of the afternoon was filled with a rain that was consistent throughout much of the day, causing some turbulence on the river.
Next week, the Quakers return to Philadelphia to take on arch rival Princeton. The two schools will race for the Wood-Hammond Trophy on Saturday, Apr. 18 on the Schuylkill River.
