PHILADELPHIA - First-year head coach Nick Baker has released the official 2009 Fall schedule for the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team. The Quakers will take part in five regatta's in October with the homecoming Alumni row capping off the fall season on Nov. 7.
The Quakers open the 2009 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 3 when they travel north to PoughKeepsie, N.Y., for the Quadricentennial Regatta hosted by Marist College. The following Saturday, Penn hosts for the first time on the Schuylkill River. The home opening Navy Day Regatta is set to take place on Oct. 10.
Joining many of the top teams in the country, Penn will then head to Boston, Mass., for the historic Head of the Charles on Sunday, Oct. 18. After hosting the Head of the Schuylkill on Oct. 24, the Red and Blue crew have their final fall races at the Princeton Chase in Princeton, N.J.
During homecoming weekend, the Penn lightweights will welcome back the alumni, allowing the former Quakers an opportunity to get back onto the Schuylkill.
The lightweights enter the 2009-10 season with most of the team in tact from a season ago as the squad lost just two seniors. Coach Baker will be entering his first season with the Quakers after a three-year stint at Navy, while assistant coach Patrick Rufo is set to begin his second season with the Red and Blue lightweights.
