PHILADELPHIA At the annual Navy Day Regatta on Saturday the Penn’s men’s lightweights got the 2008-09 campaign underway in impressive fashion.
In the Men's College 4, Penn placed three of four boats in the top 10. Of the 20 competing boats, Penn's lightweight A boat of Jason Bernstein (c), Newton Sears (4), Paul Shay (3), Peter Ciullo (2) and Brad Adams (1) placed third with a time of 14:56.80. Molly Mitchell (c), Adam Neinstein (4), Nathan Keane (3), Kellen Coppola (2) and Ryan Taras (1) finished fifth at 15:16.50 in the B boat. Penn's C boat was 10th at 15:34.20 and the D boat placed 15th in a time of 16:16.90.
Against 13 boats in the College Eight, the four lightweight boats placed second, seventh, ninth and 12th. In boat A, Lin He (c), Sears, Shay, Ciullo, Lang, Neinstein, Adams, Dave Mannion and Taras, finished as the runner-up behind Navy at 13:38.70. Boat B for Penn (Bernstein-c, Andrew Voss, Keane, Coppola, Kevin Chang, Paul Rivenburgh, Andrews Macalaster, Matt Crump, and Boyan Makarenko) finished in 13:56.80 for a seventh-place showing.
In the Novice College Eight, Penn's A and B boats placed 10th and 14th, respectively.
Next up for the Quakers lightweights is the Head of the Charles in Boston, Mass. on Sunday, Oct. 19.
