PHILADELPHIA Many of the University of Pennsylvania lightweight rowers saw a lot of action on Sunday when the team competed at the Frostbite Regatta on Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River.
Penn had boats in multiple events and many of the Quakers gained the chance to compete in more than one event. In the 2,000-meter event, the races were much shorter than the average three-mile distance.
Penn’s third varsity was a second-place finisher in its flight of the College Lightweight Eight. The boat finished behind Delaware in the second flight with a time of 7:14.48, placing them seventh overall. The freshman boat was fourth in its flight of the same race. With a finish of 6:41.64, the team placed fifth.
The lightweights also participated in some heavyweight competitions, enabling them to see some different levels of competition. Penn’s B’ boat placed second in its flight, six seconds behind Georgetown (6:23.45) and was eighth overall. The A’ boat then placed fourth in its flight against the heavyweight field. The boat’s time of 6:22.52 was good enough for seventh overall.
The Frostbite Regatta marked the final competition for Penn’s lightweights this fall. The Quakers will next take to the water in competition on March 28 when they race in the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia.
