PHILADELPHIA - In the race for the national title, the University of Pennsylvania lightweight varsity 8 finished fourth in their heat and first in the petite final on Sunday at the IRA Regatta to place seventh in the nation. The varsity 4 finished ninth on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
In their heat, the varsity 8 finished fourth behind Ivy rivals Yale, Dartmouth and Cornell with a time of 6:03.242. That time put Penn in the petite final where the Quakers went head-to-head with Georgetown. Penn gained a comfortable lead and held off the Hoyas for a six-second victory. The Red and Blue finished in 6:05.836, while Georgetown stopped the clock at 6:11.999.
The varsity 4 finished fifth in their heat against an all-Ivy field of Yale, Princeton, Columbia and Cornell. Penn fell off the pace and crossed the line in 7:08.773. Much like the varsity 8, that pushed the Quakers into the petite final. The Red and Blue once again came up short against the Lions and finished behind M.I.T. to place third overall and ninth in the nation.
Harvard won the national championship in the varsity 8 by a little more than a second over Yale in the Grand Final. The Crimson finished in 5:54.221 to claim the title.
