Lightweights Finish Third at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. - Against two crews ranked among the top five in the nation, the Universiy of Pennsylvania lightweights finished third to No. 3 Harvard and No. 5 Cornell in the Matthews-Leonard Cup races Saturday morning on the Cayuga Lake Inlet.

In the varsity race, Cornell topped the Quakers on its home course and held on to the Matthews-Leonard Cups for the third straight year. Water conditions were mostly favorable, but windy throughout the morning as the Big Red crossed the finish line in 5:53.2. Harvard joined the cup race as guest and finished in 5:54.2, while Penn stopped the clock at 6:08.7.

In a very tightly contested freshman race, Harvard came out on top with a winning time of 5:59.1. Both Cornell and Penn were just a few seats behind as the Big Red edged the Quakers at 6:01.5 to Penn's 6:03.0.

In the fours, the Quakers finished third behind a pair of Cornell boats. The Big Red finished in 7:03.7 and 7:05.5 and Penn completed the course in 7:34.4.Penn finished behind the Crimson and Big Red in the second freshman race as Harvard (6:40.2) and Cornell (6:42.5) outdistanced the Quakers (7:06.1).

Next weekend, the Quakers will vie for the Dodge Cup with Yale and Columbia. Entering today, the Bulldogs were ranked No. 1 in the nation, while the Lions were No. 7. The trio of schools will compete for the Doge Cup on Saturday on theHousatonicRiver.
