Lightweights Head to EARC Sprints on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - It is time for postseason rowing as the seventh-seeded University of Pennsylvania lightweights head to EARC Sprints on Sunday to vie for a spot at the IRA National Championship Regatta in two weeks.

Penn's third varsity will be the first to hit the water on Sunday at 8:30 a.m., while the varsity matches up with No. 6 M.I.T., No. 2 Columbia, No. 3 Princeton and No. 10 Georgetown at 10 a.m. The second varsity heat is set for 10:48 a.m., and the fours race with several heavyweights is at 11:12 a.m. The fourth varsity head straight to the Grand Final at 1:12 p.m. Complete schedule with timing for each final is here.

Last year at EARC Sprints,the lightweights took home the Kilpatrick Cup for the first time in program history with a win in the freshman race. The Quakers, who did so in record time (5:43.727) onLake Quinsigamond, claimed the program'sfirst win at Sprints since 1976 and the first for the Penn freshmen at Sprints since 1967.For the varsity, the Quakers were fifth in their heat and third in the petite final to place ninth overall.

Penn's last race was April 25 when the varsity claimed the Callow Cup from Navy for the second time in 15 years.Penn, which also claimed the 1918 Point Trophy with a pair of victories, has now posted back-to-back wins over Navy on the Severn River (2013 and 2015) and reclaimed the cup from the Midshipmen for the second time in three years. Prior to this stretch, Penn'slast win over the Midshipmen was in 2000 on Lake Carnegie. The freshmen added Penn's second victory of the day to secure the Point Trophy as they pulled away for an open water win over Navy and Delaware.
