Lightweights Head to IRA National Championships

PHILADELPHIA - First-year head coach Colin Farrell and the University of Pennsylvania lightweights head to the IRA national championship regattaon Mercer Lake in New Jersey on Sunday. In all, the Quakers will have three boats representing the Red and Blue.

The lightweight heats begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday with the grand final set for 12:20 p.m., and the petite final scheduled for 12:32 p.m. Penn will have have a 4+ and 4- compete on Saturday. A complete schedule can be foundhere.

This will be Penn's second appearance at the national championships in three years -- the program's best stretch since a three-year run from 2005-07.

In Penn's last appearance at IRA's, thevarsity 8 finished fourth in their heat and first in the petite final to finish seventh overall on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.,in 2013.

Penn reached the national championship regatta with a win in the petite final and seventh-place finish at EARC Sprints. The varsity finished fourth in its morning heat and just missed out on the Grand Final by eight-tenths of a second. The Red and Blue earned a berth at IRA's with a two-second win over Navy in the petite final. Penn's winning time of 5:51.654 was just a few seats better than the Midshipmen, about a length in front of Dartmouth, and open water ahead of Georgetown.

Alsoin Coach Farrell's first season,the lightweights claimed the Callow Cup from Navy for just the second time in the last 15 years.
