Lightweights Host Wood-Hammond Cup on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA - Its the final home regatta on the Schuylkill River for Penn's seven seniors on Saturday as theUniversity of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team hosts Princeton for the rights to the Wood-Hammond Cup. Georgetown will also join as a guest.

The morning starts with the fours at 9:40 a.m., and will be followed by the freshmen at 10 a.m. The third varsity will start at 10:20 a.m. Then the varsity boats will face off for the Wood-Hammond Cup at 110:40 a.m. The regatta will conclude with the second varsity at 11 a.m.

This marks the final home regatta for seniors Raymond Andruszko, Alan Chan, Joshua Dembowitz, Mark Gannon, Nicolas Mihalich, James Shovlin and Sean Travers.

This is the 68th Wood-Hammond Cup race between these rivals, dating back to 1941. Princeton has claimed the last seven and leads with 56 overall wins. Penn last claimed the Wood-Hammond Cup in 2005 with a victory on the Schuylkill River. Georgetown has now competed as a guest in this race in seven of the last nine years.

Last year, Georgetown -- a guest at the regatta -- led wire-to-wire and finished just 0.28 seconds off of Princeton's 14-year-old course record. The Hoyas finished in 5:38.7. Penn and Princeton were in a tight battle for the Wood-Hammond Cup for the first 1,250 meters. But it was the Tigers who had the final push on their home course to claime the cup with a time of 5:41.2. Penn finished in 5:49.4.

Last Saturday, the Penn freshmen remained unbeaten with a win over the top-ranked team in the nation. The Quakers maintained a comfortable edge down the stretch and topped No. 1 Yale by a little more than five seconds with a winning time of 5:48.3. In the Dodge Cup race, the No. 2 Bulldogs retained the cup with a time of 5:30.5. No. 5 Columbia eventually held off the Quakers for a second-place finish of 5:36.4, while Penn came across at 5:39.9.
