ANNAPOLIS, Md. - In an early Saturday morning race on the Severn River in Annapolis, Md., the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight rowing team was beaten to the finish line by Navy and the Midshipmen claimed the Callow Cup from the Quakers.
The first race of the day went off before 7 a.m., in calm waters. The Quakers were within reach of the Midshipmen throughout the First Varsity race. However, Navy held off the the Red and Blue for the Callow Cup with a winning time of 6:30.10 to Penn's 6:08.16.
The First Freshman boat was close to knocking off their counterparts, crossing the finish line in a time of 6:21.52. However, Navy beat out the Quakers with a time of 6:16.90. In the Second Freshman race, Navy pulled away to defeat the Quakers by 23 seconds. Penn clocked out at 6:49.50.
Penn's Second Varsity finished behind Navy with their time of 6:18.24 and the Third Varsity placed third with a time of 6:52.46.
Next week, the Quakers return home for the final time this season when MIT visits Philadelphia on Saturday morning.
