BOSTON, Mass. - A pair of boats represented the University of Pennsylvania lightweights at the 51st annual Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday, and posted top-10 finishes.
First up for the Quakers was the fours race on a chilly and cloudy afternoon in Boston. Coxswain Natalie Burke led Casey Howshall, Mark Roberts, James Konopka and Jackson Connor to a finish of 17:34.323. That time placed Penn sixth out of 15 crews in the race, and bested top boats from Yale, Delaware, Fordham and MIT, among others.
Shortly after, in the 8+ race, the Red and Blue finished seventh among 17 boats. Coxswain Alex Weinrich and stroke Nicholas Keenan helped Penn finish the Charles River course in 15:17.201. Princeton, Yale and Harvard were each about 10-20 seconds faster, but the Quakers were equally faster than Navy, Delaware, Dartmouth and a slew of B boats.
There are two weekends of Fall racing remaining for the Quakers. Up next is the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday, and then the Princeton Chase on Sunday, Nov. 1.
