PHILADELPHIA - The 6th-ranked University of Pennsylvania men’s lightweight rowing team returns to action on Saturday, April 16th to compete for the Dodge Cup alongside Columbia and Yale on the Schuylkill River. The regatta will run simultaneously with the Penn heavyweights and the Blackwell Cup as races are set to begin at 7:30 a.m.
The Quakers have faced some of the toughest competition in the nation in back-to-back weekends and come into Saturday’s race ranked No. 6 in the US Rowing Collegiate Poll. Columbia and Yale are both tied at No. 2 in the national rankings with 109 points. The Red and Blue rowed against top-ranked Cornell and No. 5 Harvard last weekend.
Saturday’s races marks the second of four straight weekends of competition for the Quakers as they ready for the Eastern Springs and IRA at the end of the season. The Quakers competed for the Matthews-Leonard Cups in Ithaca, N.Y. last weekend against two-time defending national champions Cornell and 5th-ranked Harvard.
The Marcellus Hartley Dodge Cup is rowed annually by Columbia, Yale, and Penn and dates back to its establishment in 1955. The Quakers have claimed the cup on 15 occasions while Yale has earned the most wins with 38. Columbia broke an 11-year streak of Yale victories in 2015 to claim their first Dodge Cup since 2003. The Red and Blue last earned bragging rights in 1992 while Detroit has also earned two wins but is no longer a regular participant for the cup.
