Lightweights Set for Head of Charles on Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - Last year, the University of Pennsylvania lightweights hoisted a trophy at the Head of the Charles for the first time in 47 years. This year marks the 50th edition of the prestigious regatta and the Quakers will look to defend their title on the Charles River Sunday.

The 2014 Head of the Charles regatta will begin at 8 a.m., and continue throughout the day. The last Penn race -- the lightweight eight -- is set to race at 3:44 p.m.

Sam Shaw,Roman Schuster,Parker Lange,Jacques DavidandAlex Weinrichwon the lightweight fours for the Quakers last season. Prior to that, Penn's only lightweight win at the Head of the Charles was in the eights in 1966.

Last week, in the first regatta under head coachColin Farrell, the lightweights posted a second-place finish in the varsity race, won the 4+ race, finished third in the freshman race and added another second-place showing at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.

All three Penn rowing programs will compete in Sunday's event, rowing throughout the day in the collegiate championships.
