Lightweights Set for Spring Opener on Schuylkill

PHILADELPHIA - After a long winter throughout the country, rowing season officially begins on Saturday for the University of Pennsylvania lightweights. The Quakers will open the year on the Schuylkill River when they host Mercyhurst on Saturday.

Racing will begin with the second varsity at 11 a.m. Penn will have two crews entered in the opening race. At 11:20 a.m., the varsity eights will go head-to-head. The fours are scheduled to race at 11:40 a.m.

In last year's season opener, the Quakers swept M.I.T. in four races on the Charles River.The varsity eight was jumped off the line by the Engineers, but rallied quickly to take the lead at the 1,000-meter mark and cruised to a one-length win.Penn’s frosh eight began a highly successful season with a victory over a pair of second varsity boats, besting MIT with open water.

In last year's meeting with Mercyhurst, the Quakers swept all three races on the Schuylkill River.In the closest race with the Lakers, the varsity pulled out in front and held on for the win with a time of 6:06.3. Mercyhurst finished in 6:09.9. The freshman boat won with a time of 6:23.3 in the second varsity race. Also in that race, Penn's second varsity was also easily ahead of the Lakers with an 11-second cushion and finish of 6:34.4. The third varsity led from start-to-finish and cruised to a seven-second, open water win at 6:41.9.
