PHILADELPHIA - Second-year head coach Colin Farrell and the No. 11 University of Pennsylvania lightweights are set to compete at the IRA National Championship regattaon Mercer Lake in New Jersey June 3-5th. Competition is set to take place Friday and Sunday and the Quakers will have three boats representing for the Red and Blue.
The lightweight heats begin Friday morning at 9:10 a.m. with the varsity 8+ boat. The Quakers fours take to the water at 11:30 a.m. and 11:50 a.m., respectively, while finals are set to take place on Sunday, June 5th. A full schedule of events can be found here.
This will be Penn's third appearance at the national championships in four years -- the program's best stretch dating back to a three-year run from 2005-07.
In Penn's last appearance at IRA's just a year ago, thevarsity 8 finished sixth in the Grand Final after advancing through with a third-place finish in their heat. It marked the best finish for the Quakers at the national championship regatta since 2005.
The IRA National Championship regatta will mark the conclusion of the 2016 season for the Quakers. The lightweights defended the Callow Cup from Navy to post back-to-back wins for the first time since the 1999 and 2000 seasons during the cup season.
