Lightweights Take On Princeton for Wood-Hammond Trophy

PHILADELPHIA - With good racing weather finally on the horizon, the University of Pennsylvania men’s lightweight rowing team will go head-to-head with Ivy rival Princeton on the Schuylkill River Saturday morning.

The Woods-Hammond Trophy will be up for grabs when the first race begins at 9 a.m. The Varsity 8 race will take place at 9:20 a.m. and the day will conclude with the final race at 10 a.m. A complete schedule and tentative boatings for the Quakers are listed below.

Last week the Quakers' Varsity 8 knocked off Columbia in placing second to Yale for the ownership rights to the Dodge Cup. The last time in which the Red and Blue crew matched up with Princeton, the Tigers escaped with the trophy with their win on Lake Carnegie.

The match-up with Princeton should provide a slight break for the Quakers when it comes to Mother Nature. The past two weeks, the team has been forced to race among some rough waters due to bad weather conditions. On April 4 against Harvard and Columbia on the Schuylkill River, the races were substituted for time trials because of the unsafe conditions. Saturday, however, has an excellent forecast of sun and warm temperatures.

Complete results of the regatta can be found at PennAthletics.com shortly after the conclusion of the competition.
