Lightweights Welcome 10 in Class of 2020

PHILADELPHIA - Head coach Colin Farrell and his staff are set to welcome the addition of 10 student-athletes as part of the men’s lightweight rowing Class of 2020 for the 2016-17 academic year.

“I am very excited to get to work with the Class of 2020,” said Farrell. “They have a real opportunity to take our team to another level starting next year. There is a wide variety of experience and backgrounds in this group, but they all wanted an opportunity to compete in college and to find their potential as lightweights. We’re thrilled to undertake that process with the team and coaches here at Penn.”

The incoming cohort hails from seven different states and includes three from Pennsylvania, two from Connecticut and five individuals representing the states of Indiana, Florida, Michigan, California and New York.

The Penn men’s lightweight rowing Class of 2020 features:

Rowing Highlights: 2016 Mercer Lake Sprints Varsity 4x Gold, 2015 + 2016 Head of the Schuylkill Varsity 4x Bronze, 2014 SRAA Nationals Light 2x Silver, 2015 Mid-Atlantic District Championships Varsity 4x Silver, 2016 Team Captain
Why I chose Penn: Since I grew up around Philadelphia, Penn had always been a school I was interested in. I knew that Penn was the place for me after my visit to campus where I was able to sit in on classes and meet the guys on the team.
What I love about rowing: There is something special to be said about the friendship that rowing creates amongst teammates.

Why I chose Penn: I chose Penn because I live about 45 minutes outside of Philadelphia and love the city. I love all the different opportunities that the city has throughout the year. I also am excited to have the opportunity to continue rowing for the next four years at Penn.
What I love about rowing: I love rowing because it challenges one to truly push their mind and body farther than they thought they were able to. I also love the bonds that are formed with my teammates.

What I love about rowing: I love the unwavering dedication that is required to be successful in rowing. The raw athleticism needed, coupled with an attention to every intricate detail, all while battling the elements, creates an experience like none other."

Why I chose Penn: I chose Penn because of the people. On my official visit everyone I met was welcoming and clearly passionate about the sport and the school. I also have close ties to Philadelphia having lived there for many years so I am excited to be coming back to the city I grew up in!
What I love about rowing: I love rowing for its beauty, its fierce competition, and the passion of its athletes. It is a sport of wonderful extremes.

Rowing Highlights: I achieved the fastest lightweight 2k on my team the end of my sophomore year.
Why I chose Penn: It's a great school, I enjoy the atmosphere and the community, and I've met many alumni that are very admirable.
What I love about rowing: It's an escape. When you're rowing hard, you don't really have the mental capacity to think about anything else.

Why I chose Penn: The opportunity to continue my dad’s legacy as a P150 while studying at the Wharton School in the beautiful city of Philadelphia, the rowing capital of the country, is why I chose Penn.
What I love about rowing: I love rowing because it fosters a level of discipline and dedication in me that I didn’t know existed before I started.

Rowing Highlights: This is my first full season of rowing, so I only have a few rowing highlights. 1st place - Head of the Schuylkill Regatta 2015. Plans to compete at the Henley Royal Regatta, summer 2016.
Why I chose Penn: I chose the University of Pennsylvania not only because of the prestigious academic and the rowing programs, but also because I felt very comfortable here during my visits.
What I love about rowing: Of all the sports that I have played over the course of my childhood, rowing is the one sport where winning satisfies me the most. In my opinion, there is nothing better than beating another crew in a head to head race.
Favorite Athlete: Thomas Muller

Why I chose Penn: Penn is one of the greatest schools in the world. It’s a place where phenomenal professors mold students into intellectuals. Penn also has a great lightweight rowing program that affords so much opportunity. The program is improving with each year and rows on the beautiful and historic Schuylkill River.
What I love about rowing: I simply love everything about the sport of rowing. The intensity of rowing is paired with precision and technique. This creates an amazing dichotomy between pain and elegance. Lastly, I love the team aspect of rowing. Knowing that eight other people are relying on you and you on them creates an unbreakable bond not found in other sports.
Favorite Athlete: Didier Drogba

Why I chose Penn: I chose to come to Penn because it offers the perfect combination of my interests in the classroom and intensity on the water. Getting a chance to row on the Schuylkill and study in Philadelphia is an opportunity unlike any other.
What I love about rowing: I can’t speak about any activity in my life with more passion than rowing. The bond with my teammates, the atmosphere of each regatta, and the chance to continually improve make the sacrifices of rowing so rewarding.

Why I chose Penn: I chose Penn because I want to surround myself with smart, hardworking, and driven people, have a first class education, and row for a strong team that likes to win.
What I love about rowing: I love that rowing is a great equalizer. No one is a natural at rowing, the only way to win is to work harder than the guys in the other boat.
