Philadelphia- Penn freshman setter Linda Zhang was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week while junior outside hitter Cara Thomason was named to the honor roll, as announced by the league offices this afternoon.
Zhang opened the 2004 campaign on Sept. 10 with 56 set attempts and 10 kills in Penn’s 3-1 victory over Duquesne in the first match of the Fairfield Inn Jefferson Cup held at the University of Virginia. Zhang also had 14 set attempts and two digs in the Quakers 3-0 victory over Radford later the same day. She finished the tournament with 50 set attempts and 6 kills in Penn’s 3-2 loss to the University of Virginia on her way to being named to the All-Tournament team.
Thomason had an outstanding weekend, finishing with 46 kills and five blocks for the Quakers. With her efforts on the offensive end,the outside hitterhelped the Red and Blue to a 2-1 weekend. She opened the season on Sept. 10 with 18 kills in Penn's 3-1 victory over Duquesne. Thomason also contributed 13 kills in the Quakers 3-0 victory over Radford later the same day, and she finished the tournament with 15 kills in Penn's 3-2 loss to the University of Virginia. Her performance landed her a spot on the All-Tournament team. She also currently leads the country in service aces per game with an average of 1.17.
The Quakers (2-1) are back in action on Friday, Sept. 17 and Saturday, Sept. 18 at the University of San Diego Tournament. The Red and Blue take on Oregon State on Friday at 5 p.m. PST and play San Diego at 10 am PST on Saturday and again at 5 p.m. PST against Nevada.
