PHILADELPHIA Another week, another win, and more recognition for the sprint football team. Following a 38-25 win in overtime against Cornell, two Quakers have been recognized as Player of the Week by the Collegiate Sprint Football League. Rob Lombardi was named Offensive Player of the Week and Gage O'Connell was named Defensive Player of the Week.
For Lombardi, this is his second selection of the season. He was previously recognized for his performance in Penn’s 60-7 win over Princeton. Last Saturday against Cornell, Lombardi rushed the ball 22 times for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns. His first score was a 58-yard run in the third quarter that gave Penn a 21-14 lead. The TD was the first play from scrimmage following a Cornell score to tie the game. Lombardi’s second touchdown came in overtime from three yards out. In addition to his offensive production, Lombardi was up to the challenge on the other side of the ball as well. He was inserted into the defensive backfield in overtime and broke up a Cornell pass on 4th down that would have tied the game. For the season, Lombardi leads the CSFL in rushing with 436 yards.
O’Connell has been impressive during his freshman season. Against Cornell, he registered eight tackles, including six solo stops. He also forced a fumble. O’Connell has acquitted himself to the linebacking corps for the Quakers, totaling 21.5 tackles, 13 of which were unassisted. He has 2.5 tackles for a loss and has forced a fumble and recovered a fumble on the season.
The Quakers are tied for first in the CSFL with Navy. The two teams meet for the only time this season Friday night at Franklin Field. Game time is 7 p.m. The winner of the game will have the inside track to the league title.
