Longballs Lead Softball to Sweep of Yale

PHILADELPHIA – It was "three runs a charm" for the University of Pennsylvania softball team as the Quakers brought their seven-game losing streak to an end with a pair of 3-0 wins over Yale to kick off the Ivy season at Penn Park Monday evening. Penn's scoring was led by freshman duo Alexis Sargent and Leah Allen, who each recorded their fourth home runs this season. Sargent hit two roundtrippers on the day (one in each game), while Allen hit homer in the second game. Joining the freshmen in leading the bats was senior Elysse Gorney, who recorded two RBI on the day. The Red and Blue are now 6-11 overall, 2-0 Ivy.

Game 1 – Yale (3-16, 0-3 Ivy)
WP: Alexis Borden (3-6), 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

LP: Lindsay Efflandt (0-7), 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

In her ninth start and fifth complete game of the season, junior Alexis Borden recorded her third win and first shut out of 2014. After Yale’s leadoff hitter Sarah Onorato grounded out to short, Borden eased through the top of the first as she struck out the next two Bulldogs.

With two outs and senior Kayla Dahlerbruch on first in the bottom of the first, Sargent came up to the plate and hit what would be her first homer of the day to center field. The longball gave Borden all the run support she would need and quickly set down the Bulldogs in the second inning to give her offense a chance to keep the momentum rolling.

With runners on first and second and two outs, senior Elysse Gorney doubled to the right-field wall and knocked in sophomore Kanani Datan -- who reached base via walk -- to extend the lead to 3-0.

It was a quiet game after the second, as the two teams totaled only three hits – Penn two, Yale one -- in the next four and a half innings.

Game 2 – Yale (3-17, 0-4 Ivy)
WP: Alexis Sargent (3-2), 7.0 IP, 7 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

LP: Rhydian Glass (1-4), 4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Coming into the game with the top ERA on the team (1.50), Sargent lowered her number by the end of the game to 1.21 after going the distance with seven innings of shutout ball, as Penn completed its first shutout sweep in Ivy play since last year against Yale.

Unlike the first game, Penn scored its runs one at a time, first getting on the board in the second after Sargent led off with a solo shot to center field. It was her second homer of the day and fourth of the season.

With the 1-0 lead, one out, and Turchin on first in the third, the Quakers scored their second run off of a double to left center by Gorney.

Holding off the Bulldogs for another inning, the Red and Blue scored their final insurance run of the day from a second solo shot on the day from a leadoff batter. This time it was Leah Allen and her homer to right center was her fourth of the season.

Penn will be back in action April 2 at Penn Park to host Big 5 rival Temple in a single game starting at 4 p.m.
