PHILADELPHIA – With two wins last weekend against Ivy League opponents, Penn completed its sweep through the Ancient Eight regular season for a seventh consecutive League championship. On Monday, the Quakers completed another sweep – picking up both Ivy League weekly awards – as Shannon Mangini was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week and Lucy Ferguson was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Shannon Mangini came up with big goal after big goal for the Red and Blue, scoring hat tricks in each game last weekend. Twice she scored the game-tying goal to force overtime and twice she scored in overtime as the Quakers improved to a program-best 4-0 in overtime games this season. Overall this season, Mangini has scored three goals in overtime – most by a Penn player in program history and most by an Ivy League player since 2011.
In addition to her selection as Ivy Player of the Week, Mangini was named WomensLax.com National Player of the Week. This marks the second time this season she has received that honor.
Lucy Ferguson was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, marking the fourth time in 2013 that Penn has had a player tabbed as top defender for the last week of games. Ferguson made 11 saves in the two wins, with a goals-against average of 7.27. She went the full 66 minutes in each game, improving her record in overtime games to 4-0 this season. On Wednesday, she made seven saves in the win over Princeton, including a game-saver with 0:04 left on the clock in regulation before a game-clincher to preserve the lead with 0:33 left in overtime.
The Quakers (9-4) head to Northwestern on Saturday before hosting the Ivy League Tournament for the fourth year in a row starting May 3 at Franklin Field.
