PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Section PGA has announced its award winners for the year, and Penn women’s golf coach Mark Anderson has been honored with the Horton Smith Award.
The Horton Smith Award recognizes continuing contributions to professional education, and this year marks the first time Anderson has been honored as the Horton Smith recipient. Previously, he had been awarded the Bill Strausbaugh Award in 2007.
The Section honors professionals in eleven categories, including Teacher of the Year and Golf Professional of the Year. The Section also honors a local salesperson with the Salesperson of the Year award. This year’s winners featured four first time recipients as well as seven previous award winners.
Anderson who is head professional at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, Penn golf’s home course is in his first year working with the Quaker women’s team. This spring, he returns three letterwinners and has four newcomers. Penn will open the 2009 spring season with the First Market Bank Intercollegiate on March 21-22, and culminate the season with the Ivy League Championships in Atlantic City, N.J. from April 24-26.
