Mark Rappo, Micah Burak Advance to Finals at EIWA Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. - After the first day of action at the 107th EIWA Championships, Penn has eight wrestlers left in the tournament including finalists Mark Rappo (125 pounds) and Micah Burak (197 pounds).

Rappo picked up two wins on the day, downing Army's David White, 10-4, and No. 3 seed Garrett Frey of Princeton, 4-2, in the semifinals. Rappo, the second seed, will meet top-seeded Frank Perrelli of Cornell in the final.

Burak went 3-0 on Saturday to advance to his second consecutive EIWA finals as only a sophomore. He started his day with a 6-0 win over Columbia's Mike Pushpak before picking up a major decision over Navy's No. 7 seed Peter Huntley. Burak, the No. 2 seed, then downed No. 6 Michael Wagner from Rutgers, 4-1, in the semis. His early takedown 27 seconds into the first period helped Burak post 3:38 o riding time throughout the match. He will meet the man who defeated him last year in the conference finals, No. 1 seed and national No. 1 Cam Simaz of

With their berths in the EIWA finals, Rappo and Burak became Penn's first two NCAA qualifiers in 2011. For Burak, this will be his second trip to NCAAs while Rappo will be making his first-ever appearance at the national tournament.

The other four wrestlers competing have chances to secure automatic bids tomorrow morning in wrestlebacks. Rollie Peterkin needs to finish third at 133 by winning twice. Zack Kemmerer needs one win tomorrow to get his auto bid at 141 as does Scott Giffin at 174. Gabriel Burak needs to win his first match tomorrow against Justin Kerber of Cornell to secure his automatic bid.

Penn had four semi-finalists overall, including one at the first three weights. However, after Rappo's win, No. 3 seeded Rollie Peterkin (133 pounds) and No. 2 seed at 141 pounds Zack Kemmerer was defeated.
Peterkin had a full two minutes of riding time after two periods against Cagnina, but a late takedown from Cagnina tied the match with 33 seconds left. In sudden victory, Cagnina ducked under and scored the winning takedown while tacking on two backpoints for a 6-2 decision. Peterkin will wrestle Princeton's Tony Communale tomorrow for an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

At 141, Kemmerer scored the first takedown, scoring 1:10 into the bout. Mariarcher got an escape with 1:20 left to get within one. In the second, Kemmerer chose bottom, but Mariarcher put together a full period of riding to take a big number into the third period. He needed that riding time as Kemmerer escaped in three seconds to tie the match. In the final minute, Kemmerer was close to a takedown, initiating a 25-second scramble, but a stalemate was called. Mariarcher was able to evade final shots and take the 3-2 win. He will wrestle Trevor Melde of Rutgers tomorrow morning for an automatic bid to the NCAAs.
