PHILADELPHIA - Junior Mark Rappo is putting together his best season as a collegiate wrestler, setting a career high already in wins with his 23-5 record at 125 pounds. After a 3-0 performance in the first weekend of Ivy League action, Rappo was honored by the EIWA as the conference's Wrestler of the Week.
Rappo, who entered the weekend ranked No. 19 in the country, scored the biggest win of Penn's 37-10 defeat of Princeton on Sunday with a 5-3 decision over No. 17 Garrett Frey. The win was especially big for Rappo in terms of EIWA seeding as Frey was the top-ranked wrestler at 125 according to the most recent EIWA Coaches Poll while Rappo was No. 4.
In addition to the win over Frey, Rappo scored a 10-3 win over Harvard's Steven Keith and a 21-6 technical fall over Brown's Billy Waterson.
This was the first EIWA Wrestler of the Week selection for Rappo who was named second-team All-Ivy in 2010.
The Red and Blue are back on the wrestling mat Friday night in Ithaca, N.Y. when they take on No. 1 Cornell in a crucial Ivy dual at 6:30 p.m.
