PHILADELPHIA -Senior defender Meg Markham was up to her old tricks last week, wrecking havoc for opposing offenses as the Quakers allowed a total of 10 goals over two games. For her efforts, Markham was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
On Wednesday, Markham helped the Quakers improve to 3-0 inside the Ivy League with a 10-1 win at Columbia. She had two caused turnovers, two ground ball and two draw controls as the Red and Blue stifled the Lions for the opening 41:12 of the game before Columbia scored its first -- and only -- goal of the game.
The one goal allowed marked the second time in 2015 that Penn's defense conceded just one goal in a game -- no other Ivy team has put up that defensive effort once.
On Sunday, Markham had five caused turnovers and five draw controls to go with three ground balls in a 9-8 overtime loss for the Quakers at No. 6 Northwestern. Markham was one-on-one with Wildcat sniper Selena Lasota for much of the game, keeping the 40-goal scorer to just two goals -- and only one coming with Markham guarding her.
Through 11 games this season, Markham has 33 caused turnovers. Her 3.0 CTs-per-game is tops in the Ivy League and second among all Division I players.
Markham is named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and fifth of her career. She is the eighth player in Ivy League history with at least five Defensive Player of the Week honors and is tied for fifth-place all-time in the Ivy League's record book. Markham is one of two current Quakers with at least five Defensive Player of the Week awards (Lucy Ferguson, six).
Penn is back in Ivy League action on Saturday, visiting Harvard at 3 p.m.
