U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying information, results
PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Open finished its sectional qualifying earlier this week, with Penn sophomore Max Marsico one of the 37 players in the field at the Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell, Oregon.
Marsico shot 77 in Monday's first round, and then -- after weather pushed the second round to Tuesday -- carded an even-par 71 to finish at 6-over-par 148. That was good for 20th place in the field, but not enough to get him one of the two qualifying spots. Those went to Casey Martin (69-69--138) and Nick Sherwood (70-69--139).
Marsico had advanced to sectional qualifying by finishing among the top five at a local qualifying event held at Trump National Philadelphia in May. He was a Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-Northeast Region selection for the second time in as many years at Penn after leading the Quakers in stroke average (73.4) in 25 tournament rounds. Marsico was individual medalist at three events last year: the Maryland Intercollegiate, the George Washington Invitational, and the Navy Spring Invitational. After helping Penn win the Ivy League Championships team title, he was the Quakers' low scorer at the NCAA South Central Regional in Bowling Green, Ky.
