PHILADELPHIA– Thomas Awad and Sam Mattis will represent the University of Pennsylvania track & field teams at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11.
The dynamic Quaker duo are both making return appearances in Eugene while Mattis comes back as the defending NCAA National Champion in the discus. The senior thrower will be the first to compete for the Quakers on Friday, June 10th at 8:05 p.m (EST) while Awad caps the meet for the Red and Blue when he runs for a national title in the men's 5,000 meters just a few hours later at 10:25 p.m. (EST).

Both Mattis and Awad advanced to the NCAA finals with ease following solid performances at the East Regional held at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. Mattis placed second overall with a throw of 61.95 meters and is the second overall seed behind Akron’s Phillip Jagers. Awad earned an automatic qualification by finishing in the top-5 of his heat and seventh overall in a time of 14:10.33 in the men’s 5,000 meters and is the eighth overall seed in the discipline.
Prior to Mattis’ win in 2015, the last Penn athlete to win a NCAA national championshipwas in 2003whenSam Burley claimed the national title in the men's outdoor 800 meters and Brian Chaput did so with an Ivy League record in the men's javelin.
