GREENWOOD, Ind. - Senior Sam Mattis (East Brunswick, N.J.) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 2 Men's Track & Field/Cross Country first team and will now move on to the national ballot as a candidate for Academic All-America honors.
The district and national ballots are voted on by CoSIDA members with the all-district teams announced this week and the All-America teams scheduled to be released later this month.
Mattis is one of the top discus throwers in the country and has garnered numerous athletic accolades during the 2016 season. He’s twice been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Athlete of the Week and has twice thrown an Olympic A Standard during the 2016 outdoor season. Additionally, Mattis recorded the then-top discus throw in the world at the Philadelphia College Classic (67.45m) which also ranks as the top collegiate throw in the NCAA this spring.
On the conference side, Mattis is a four-time Ivy League champion in discus (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) and set a meet record at the 2016 Ivy League Championships with a toss of 62.45 meters. He’s the first-ever four-time Ivy League champion in the discus and is also a four-time First-Team All-Ivy honoree.
Mattis is currently in the midst of defending his 2015 NCAA National title as he competes for the fourth-straight year at the NCAA East Regional meet. The top 12 finishers in three flights of action will continue on to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in Eugene, Ore.
