PHILADELPHIA – Sam Mattis of the University of Pennsylvania men’s track and field team was named the USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week for the second-straight time on Tuesday.
In an early season of dominance for Mattis, it was Saturday's Penn Challenge that provided the setting this time. He followed up his All-World performance from a week ago with another dominant effort in the discus last weekend. The senior captain heaved a top mark of 61.69, which was over nine meters better than the rest of the field. Mattis extended his win streak to three-straight meets to begin the outdoor season.
The 2015 NCAA National Champion currently has all of the top-ten throws in the NCAA this season, including his 67.45 mark last weekend—which broke the American Collegiate record in the event. That throw is also the best in the world at the moment, and would have been far enough to place fourth at the 2012 Olympics in London.
Mattis will be back in action this weekend, competing at the the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
