NEW ORLEANS – Penn track and field senior discus specialist Sam Mattis has been added to The Bowerman Men’s Watch List for the month of April, as announced on Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Bowerman is awarded each year to the top male and female collegiate athlete in the sport of NCAA track and field.
With a NCAA National Championship already to his name, Mattis has continued to break records in his final season with the Quakers. At the Philadelphia College Classic in March, Mattis unleashed three throws which rank amongst the best all-time in collegiate history. His toss of 67.45 ranks as the top mark in the world this season and surpassed the Olympic ‘A’ standard by over five meters. Additionally, his performances this season have qualified him for the Olympic Trials set for July in Eugene, Ore. With his eyes set on the Rio Olympics, Mattis is in prime position to return to the top of the college ranks and possibly even a spot on Team USA.
The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA. Oregon’s Jenna Prandini and Florida’s Marquis Dendy are the reigning winners of The Bowerman, which is named for legendary Oregon track & field and cross country coach Bill Bowerman. The next men’s watch list will debut on Thursday, May 19th.
