PHILADELPHIA – The preseason watch list for the highest individual honor in all of collegiate track and field was announced on Thursday, and the University of Pennsylvania was part of it. Senior Sam Mattis appeared as one of just three student-athletes receiving votes for the prestigious Bowerman Award, sitting just outside the group of ten on the preseason list.
Mattis is coming off a historic outdoor season in 2014-15, as he became just the eighth Quaker in history to win a national championship. En route to being the first Ivy League discus thrower to win an NCAA title since 1949, Mattis tossed a school-record 62.68 meters -- over a 0.5 meter better than the field.
In addition, he earned the Heps’ crown in the discus for the third-consecutive year, while also being named a USTFCCCA first-team All-American. For his efforts, the USTFCCCA also named him the Outdoor Male Field Scholar Athlete of the Year -- becoming the first male in Ivy League history to win the award.
Mattis has qualified for the NCAA Championships in the discus in each of the last three seasons, and earned All-America recognition over the past two.
