PHILADELPHIA - Kirsten Strausbaugh and Kristen Hughes have been named captains for the 2011-12 season. Both juniors, Strausbaugh and Hughes are looking to lead a team coming off of one of its best seasons in recent history. The Quakers picked up a program-best 18 wins last season. They also captured Penn's 12th Ivy Classic title and finished second at the ECAC Championships, qualifying for the USAG Championships.
Strausbaugh enters her third season at Penn following a very decorated sophomore season. She capped off her 2010-11 season earning second-team All-America honors at the season-ending USAG Championships. She also took home first in the all-around and floor exercise at the Ivy Classic. Last season, Strausbaugh set new career highs in all four events, plus the all-around.
Hughes did not compete in any meets last season, but showed outstanding leadership skills following strong contributions on both uneven bars and balance beam during her freshman season. In her first year at Penn, Hughes set a career-high 9.225 on beam against Rutgers and scored a career-best 9.575 on bars against West Chester.
The Quakers will look to build on last season's success with eight returning letterwinners and an incoming class that features nine freshmen. Gymnastics will get its first chance to showcase this year's team at the Intrasquad meet in just over two weeks on December 2 in Hutchinson Gymnasium. The first official competition of the 2012 season will take place on January 15 when the team heads to Washington, D.C. for the George Washington/Lindsey Ferris Invitational.
