PHILADELPHIA - Seniors Thomas Mattsson and Trevor McGuinness have been named captains of the men's squash team for the 2011-12 season. These two seniors will look to provide some leadership to a team that features a young squad of four sophomores and six freshmen on the 14-player roster. They recently sat down with the Penn Sports Network to discuss their roles as captain and preview the upcoming season.
Mattsson enters the year playing in the No. 1 position on the ladder in each of his first three seasons at Penn. Of his 14 wins during his Penn career, eight have come in that top position. McGuinness split time between No. 5 and No. 6 last season and won a team-high 12 matches, including eight out of his last 10 matches to close out the 2010-11 season.
The men's squash team enters this season as the ninth-ranked squad in the preseason poll. The Quakers will travel to the Ivy League scrimmages this weekend in what will prove to be a very good challenge for the squad. The regular season for men's squash gets underway Wednesday, November 30 against Drexel. Ivy League play starts that following Sunday against Princeton.
