PHILADELPHIA - Nabilla Ariffin and Pia Trikha have been named women's squash captains for the 2011-12 season. Both juniors, Ariffin and Trikha will lead a squad that has no seniors, but is also not short on experience as eight of the top-nine players from last season return. Recently, the two captains sat down with the Penn Sports Network to discuss taking on a leadership role with the team and preview the upcoming season.
Ariffin has earned second-team All-America honors in both of her first two seasons at Penn playing over half of her matches in the No. 1 position. She has won 19 matches in two seasons, including a 4-2 record against Ivy League opponents last season. Trikha played exclusively at No. 5 last season and won 14 consecutive matches to start the season and ended with second-team All-America accolades, finishing the year 16 wins.
Ariffin and Trikha are two of the four returning All-Americans on the women's side along with Rachael Goh and Yarden Odinak. The women's squad will be taking part in the Ivy League scrimmages this weekend in what will be a good test in the preseason for the squad. When the regular season gets underway, women's squash will jump right into the heart of its schedule with a matchup against No. 3 Princeton on Sunday, December 3. The Quakers are ranked fifth in the preseason poll.
