PHILADELPHIA The head coaches of the six Division I field hockey programs in Philadelphia announced their selections to the 2007 All-Philadelphia team last week. Penn is represented by two seniors Nicole Black and Meghan Rose.
Black was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection. Her 11 goals were a team-high and the most by a Quaker since 2003. She had four two-goal games, finding the back of the cage against Dartmouth (9/29), Lock Haven (10/5), Yale (10/19) and Brown (10/27). Four of her goals were game-winners for the Quakers.
Head coach Val Cloud was effusive in her praise of Black.
“Nicole had one of the best scoring seasons in the history of Penn field hockey,” she said, “She kept us in the running for the Ivy League title up until the last game of the season where she scored one of the most incredible goals I have ever seen. Her great speed and skill led to her 11 goals, all of which she created in the open field.”
Rose finished second on the team in goals (7), assists (4) and points (18). She took four penalty strokes this season and scored on all of them. She ends her career tied for fifth all-time in assists for Penn with 17.
“As a co-captain of our team, Meghan was a great leader both on and off the field,” Cloud said, “Meghan’s vision, competitiveness and discipline have made her a vital part of our starting lineup for the last three seasons. She set a Penn record by scoring on all four of her penalty strokes this year.”
The coaches chose Temple’s Ali Lokey as Most Valuable Player.
