PHILADELPHIA - On the heels of another successful season and with the 2015-16 competition slate in the books, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Steve Dolan officially announced the 2016 cross country season on Thursday afternoon.
"With a number of accomplished veteran performers and some talented newcomers, this will be an exciting fall for Penn cross country,” said Dolan. “Competing locally with the great college programs in the Philadelphia area early in the season has worked well for us in recent years so we are planning that way again in 2016.”
The Red and Blue will begin the season at the Big 5 Invitational on their home course at Belmont Plateau on Sept. 9, followed by another local meet a week later at Haverford College for the Mainline Invitational on Sept. 16.
October preps the Quakers with a solid slate of competition against some of the best teams in the nation starting with the Paul Short Invitational on Oct. 1. They’ll return to action on Friday, Oct. 14th for the uber-competitive Wisconsin Invitational, a key meet for NCAA Championship qualifications. The Princeton Invitational is set for Oct. 15th and the Quakers round out the month with Heps on Oct. 29th where they’ll race for league titles.
“We hope to be in very good form as we hit some very competitive invitational meets in the in the month of October. Competing among many of the top teams in the nation at the Wisconsin Invitational will be an exciting addition to this year’s schedule. The championship season begins at the Heptagonal Championships at Princeton on October 29th. Our training will be designed to be at our best for the championship meets.”
Mid-Atlantic Regionals are set for Nov. 11 in State College, Pa. where the men and women will look to finish in the top two of the team standings for an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships, while the season culminates with the National Championships on Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Ind.
