PHILADELPHIA – In
a match that endured more than four hours, the University of Pennsylvania’s men’s
squash team dropped a 5-4 decision to Drexel on Wednesday night at the Kline
and Specter Squash Center. It is the Quakers’ first loss of the season, moving their record to 2-1 on the year.
Facing their City rivals for the sixth straight season, the Red and Blue had to battle from behind all night. In the first shift of matches—including slots three, six and nine— senior captain George Lemmon was the only Quaker to pull out a win. Lemmon was a 3-1 victor over Noel Solomon, improving his record to 2-0 this season.
Drexel would add to its lead with a win in the No. 8 position, as M.A Makarim earned a 3-1 triumph over Max Reed. Down 3-1, the Quakers rattled off back-to-back wins to tie the match. First, it was a 3-0 sweep from Anders Larson at the No. 7 spot followed by a 3-1 win from Hayes Murphy at No. 5.
The Dragons, who were seeking their first-ever win over Penn, pulled out a pair of matches that went the distance to clinch the victory. Omar El Atmas nabbed a 3-2 victory at No. 2, while Michael Thompson recorded Drexel’s final triumph with a win over James Watson at No. 4. Watson came back from 2-0 down but couldn’t seal the deal in the fifth game.
In the final match of the night, Marwan Mahmoud made the final margin, 5-4, with a 3-2 win at the Quakers’ No. 1 position.
The Red and Blue will go on the road this weekend, traveling to upstate New York to take on Rochester (Saturday) and St. Lawrence (Sunday).
