PHILADELPHIA – With the Quakers’ fall season officially kicking off in three days, the Albert G. Molloy Head Coach of Men’s Tennis, David Geatz, has announced Josh Pompan and Matt Nardella as the team’s captains for the 2016-17 season.
“We are very pleased to announce Matt and Josh as our team captains this year," said Coach Geatz. "They are both great competitors, display the Penn Grit and are the type of kids who will lead not just by what they say, but by what they do.”
Nardella enters his senior season with a wealth of experience under his belt, including a team-high 35 career singles wins. Most recently, he led the Quakers in both winning percentage (.545) and singles triumphs (12) last spring. Playing mostly in the No. 3 and No. 4 slots, Nardella put together wins over No. 54 East Tennessee State, No. 39 Dartmouth, No. 52 Princeton (2x), No. 64 New Mexico, No. 35 Penn State, No. 30 San Diego, and No. 50 Cornell. In addition, he added five victories at No. 2 doubles, including consecutive triumphs to end the season.
Pompan joined Nardella as one of Penn’s most consistent
performers a year ago. The California native piled up nine wins in the No. 2
and No. 3 singles positions, including the Quakers’ most thrilling triumph of
the season. Down 5-1 in the third set against Brown’s Mladen Mitak, Pompan
rallied to secure a dramatic 4-3 victory for the Quakers. Pompan also saw success last
fall, advancing to the Round of 16 of the ITA Regional and winning a doubles
flight with Ismael Lahlou at the Wake Forest Invitational.
This weekend's Penn Invitational will run Friday morning through mid-afternoon on Sunday, with all matches to be played at the Hamlin and Hecht Tennis Centers.
