Men's, Women's XC Earn Top-5 Finishes at Paul Short Run

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s cross country teams raced to solid performances at the Paul Short Run on Saturday, placing 4th and 3rd, respectively, in the overall team standings.

Hosted by Lehigh University, the Paul Short Run has historically been known as one of the top meets in the nation and the Quakers proved once again they are amongst the best in the NCAA with their runs today.

The 26th-ranked Quaker men began the morning in the College Gold 8k race where they raced to a fourth place team finish with 146 team points and 49 second spread. Senior Nick Tuck led the way, placing ninth overall in the individual standings with a total time of 23:52 averaging 4:46 mile pace. Following closely behind was classmate Brendan Shearn in 17th who crossed the line just nine seconds later.

Sophomore Patrick Hally and junior Chris Luciano were solid in the No. 3 and No. 4 team spots, clocking in 34th and 35th, and junior Ross Wilson rounded out the scoring members in 51st.

The 22nd-ranked Quaker women were next to the starting boxes just 45 minute later in the College Gold 6k, and the Red and Blue showed they were every bit their national and regional rankings with a third place team finish. Senior Ashley Montgomery paced herself to second place in the individual standings, clocking in a time of 20:12 and with a 5:25 average mile pace.

The top-five finishers on the women’s end remained the same from the Main Line Invitational held just two weeks ago. Cleo and Clarissa Whiting raced to 19th and 21st places while freshman Erin Feeney clocked in 36th with a time of 20:43. Junior Abby Hong rounded out the scoring members in 49th place.

10 members were allowed to compete in the team races with the top-5 counting towards team scores. The Quakers also had several student-athletes compete in the men’s and women’s open races held just prior to the gold races which commenced at 11 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., respectively.

Following today’s action, Penn will return to competition on Friday, Oct. 14th when they travel to the Wisconsin Invitational for another highly-anticipated meet. The women’s race features 18 ranked teams while the men’s race has 21 ranked squads set to compete. Competition is set to begin at 11 a.m. in Madison.
