Men's and Women's Fencing Each Take 2nd at Ivy Round Robins

PRINCETON - The Quakers posted a pair of perfect days at the second Ivy League Round Robin held at Princeton on Sunday. With the undefeated second rounds, both the men's and women's teams secured second place finishes in the Ivy League. The men went 2-0 to finish Ivy action at 4-1. A 3-0 day for the women gave them a 5-1 record. Both teams finished behind Columbia for the Ivy title. In addition to the second place finishes, eight Quakers earned All-Ivy honors based on their performances during the round robins.

The day started off with bouts against Brown. The women defeated the Bears, 20-7, and the men were victorious, 16-11.

The women won all three weapons against Brown, by scores of 7-2 (sabre), 6-3 (foil) and 7-2 (epee). Danielle Kamis, Kathryn Anthony and Stephanie Wheeler each won all three matches she fenced.

On the men's side, the Quakers won sabre, 8-1, and epee, 6-3. The Bears took foil, 7-2. Samuel Monk, Jonathan Berkowsky and Matthew Kolasa all had 3-0 records against Brown.

The women then fenced against Cornell, defeating the Big Red by a score of 18-9. The Quakers again won all three weapons, 6-3 in sabre, 7-2 in foil and 5-4 in epee. Alexis Baran and Ilana Sinkin each went undefeated in the match.

Both teams ended the day, and Ivy competition, against Princeton. Both matches ended in 20-7 scores in favor of the Red and Blue.

The women completed their day-long sweep of weapons, winning sabre and epee by 6-3 scores and dropping only one foil bout on their way to an 8-1 win in that weapon.Zoya Abdikulova, Abby Emerson and Kathryn Anthony all had 3-0 records in the bout.

The men defeated the Tigers in all three weapons on their way to a 20-7 win. The largest win came in foil, an 8-1 victory. The Quakers also won sabre, 7-2, and epee, 5-4. Jonathan Berkowsky, Mario Ponticello and Alex Salsman combined to go 9-0 against Princeton.

At the end of competition, All-Ivy honors were awarded. Eight Quakers fenced their way to the top of the class in the Ancient Eight, four first-teamers and four second teamers.
