UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. The University of Pennsylvania men’s and women’s fencing teams competed at the Penn State Invitational on Saturday. The men went 2-1 while the women went 1-2.
The men defeated No. 6 St. John’s 14-13 and Haverford 21-6, andlost to No. 3 Penn State 15-12. Sophomore Corey Purcell went 3-0 against the Nittany Lions and 2-0 against the Red Storm. Fellow sophomore Ron Berkowsky was also a perfect 3-0 against Penn State.
Against St. John's, the men's foil went 7-2 and picked up the Quakers only win. Along with Berkowsky and Purcell's five victories, captain Mike Galligan also contributed two wins. In Penn's victory over Haverford, it was the sabre that led the charge by a score of 8-1. Matthew Kolasa and Zachary Yeates combined to go 6-0 and Dave Dipaola went 2-1. In the epee, Ben Wieder and Alex Tozzo picked up three wins a piece.
On the women’s side, the Quakers defeated Haverford 23-4 but dropped bouts to No. 2 Penn State 17-10 and No. 6 St. John’s 18-9. Pennhad an impressive showing against Haverford. The Red and Blue had 7-2 wins in the sabre and epee and a 9-0 win in the foil. Ilana Sinkin, Zoya Abdikulova, Abby Emerson and Eve Overton combined for Penn's nine wins in thefoil.
The men and women will be in action Sunday, Feb. 5 at Cornell in the first of two Ivy Weekends.
