PHILADELPHIA- The men's and women's fencing teams opened their season today in a home meet in Weightman Gym against Drew and Sacred Heart. Both teams went 2-0. The men beat Drew 19-8, and Sacred Heart 23-4, while the women defeated Drew 25-2, and Sacred Heart 25-2.
The men’s team beat Sacred Heart 23-4, with the sabre squad winning 7-2, the foil team going 9-0, and the epee team also winning 7-2. Against Drew, the men won 19-8, with foil going 8-1, sabre earning seven wins with only two losses, and epee dropping 4-5.
In the sabre, sophomore Matthew Kolasa and freshman Andrew Bielen both went 6-0 in their individual matches. In foil, junior Ron Berkowsky continued his unbeaten streak, as he went 3-0 against Drew and Sacred Heart. Junior Corey Purcell went 5-1 in his matches, while freshman Mario Ponticello went 6-0 in his collegiate fencing debut. The epee squad also fared well. Samuel Monk went 2-2, despite a hamstring injury. Sophomore Ben Wieder went 5-1, while freshman Christian Pearson went 2-2 in his debut.
The women’s squad dominated Sacred Heart, winning 25-2, as the sabre went 7-2, and both the foil and epee squads going 9-0. Against Drew, the women won 25-2, with sabre and foil going 9-0, while the epee team went 7-2.
In sabre, Alexis Baran and Cassandra Partyka went 6-0 in their two matches, while freshman Tamara Levy went 4-2 in her first time fencing sabre. The women’s foil squad of Abby Emerson, Eve Overton, and Ilana Sinkin went a perfect 6-0 in each of their matches. In epee, Holly Buechel and Kristen Hughes led the way, as they both went 6-0, while senior Jackie Schramm went 2-1, and freshman Kathryn Anthony went 2-1 in her collegiate debut.
Up next, the fencing teams will take part in the Philadelphia Invitational Multi Meet in Haverford, Pa. on Jan. 20.
