PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men's and women's swimming teams will send squads to the University of Virginia this weekend for the Cavalier Invitational, a two-day meet on Friday and Saturday that follows a prelims/finals format. Racing will start at 10 a.m. each day with the finals to begin at 6 p.m. each evening.
Unlike some competitions Penn has raced in past years, this weekend's race will be scored as opposed to a meet designed simply for best times. The other six schools that the Quakers will compete against are Drexel, Duke, James Madison, Old Dominion, Virginia and William & Mary.
A total of 14 men will represent the Red and Blue, with seven seniors - Conor Blackwood, Ryan Carey, Christopher Delafuente, Chris Fleming, Nick Johnson, Ryan Littlefield and Logan Ware - making their collegiate send-off. They will be joined by 13 members of the women's team, including two, Tatiana McLaughlan and Erica Pangilinan, who will also be making their final appearance for Penn.
Eighteen events - all swimming - are on the docket over the two days of competition. Penn will take to the blocks in five relays along with 13 individual events.
This weekend marks the end of the regular season for both teams, with the Ivy League Championships to follow. The women's championship will be held February 28-March 2 at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool. The men's championships will follow a week later, from March 7-9, at Brown's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
