Men's Basketball Beats Columbia, 64-54

PHILADELPHIA -The Penn men's basketball team won the opening tip against Columbia on Friday night. Almost immediately, Zack Rosen hit a three-point shot.

That was a theme throughout the night.

Rosen simply controlled Friday night's game, scoring 17 points and dishing off nine assists with just three turnovers. Following his lead, Penn never trailed in gaining a 64-54 win over the Lions at The Palestra. With the victory, the Quakers are back at .500 overall (12-12) and remain alone in third place with a 6-4 Ivy League mark. Columbia fell to 14-11, 5-6 in Ivy play.

Miles Cartwright had 13 points for Penn, while Tyler Bernardini added 11. Jack Eggleston nearly had a double-double, with eight points and 11 rebounds.

Penn pounded the boards on Friday night -- less than two weeks after being outrebounding 35-19 by the Lions in New York City, the Quakers outboarded their opponent 41-33 on Friday night. In particular, Mike Howlett (7), Bernardini (6) and Zack Gordon (five in 11 minutes) helped Eggleston control the glass.

The first half was a sluggish affair, one that ended with Penn up 23-18 thanks to a Rosen three-pointer at the buzzer. Columbia got within three on a pair of occasions early in the second stanza, but Penn used a 9-0 run that turned a 25-22 lead into a 34-22 advantage. Columbia never got closer than six after that.

Noruwa Agho, who killed Penn in New York two weeks ago, led all scorers with 20 points. Brian Barbour slashed his way to 19, while Asenso Ampim had 10 and six rebounds.

Penn is back in action Saturday night, hosting Cornell at 7 p.m. The Big Red fell to Princeton, 84-66, Friday night at the Tigers' Jadwin Gym.
