PHILADELPHIA -The Penn men's basketball team used a 21-2 run bridging the two halves, and that was enough as the Quakers defeated Marist, 84-71, Friday night at The Palestra.
Senior Tyler Bernardini had another stupendous offensive game Friday night, scoring a career-high 30 points and hitting eight three-pointers for the second game in a row. Bernardini has now gone 16-of-23 from beyond the arc in the last two games and scored 59 points.
Zack Rosen was his usual solid self, scoring 13 points and dishing off 12 assists which was one shy of the program's single-game mark. He now has 493 assists for his career, and needs just 13 to become the program's all-time leader ahead of his current head coach, Jerome Allen. In addition to Bernardini and Rosen, Penn's other three starters also reached double digits in the scoring column Friday as Henry Brooks scored a career-high 13, Rob Belcore had 11, and Miles Cartwright added 10.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair marked by scoring runs by both sides. Penn started things by scoring the game's first seven points, before Marist went on a 9-1 run to take its first lead of the night. The game remained fairly even for several minutes after that, before the Red Foxes used a 7-2 burst to take a 34-27 lead with just over four minutes left before the break.
Penn scored the next nine points after that, however, as Bernardini sandwiched a pair of treys -- his third and fourth of the half -- around a jumper and a free throw by Cartwright. Devin Price tied the score at 36-36 inside a minute with a pair of free throws, but Cartwright answered with his own foul shots to put the Quakers up by two at the break.
Penn then scored the first ten points of the second half as each of the starters scored two points each. When Bernardini hit a pair of free throws with just over 16 minutes left the Red and Blue's lead was 48-36, before Price finally broke the second-half skid for Marist with a pair of free throws out of the first media timeout.
While the scoring drought was broken, Penn's run was not. The Quakers scored 12 of the next 14 points, punctuating the run with a pair of Bernardini three-pointers that pushed Penn's lead to a season-high 19 points at 60-41. At that point, the Red and Blue's run was at a staggering 33-7.
Marist never seriously threatened after that. The Red Foxes got within 12 on a few occasions, the last at 74-62, but Penn responded with a 10-1 run that pushed its lead to 21 (84-63) late in the contest.
Devin Price scored 15 points to lead Marist, while Isaiah Morton had 11 and R.J. Hall scored 10.
Penn returns to action twice next week, traveling to North Carolina to face Davidson on Thursday and Duke on Sunday.
